Texas Again/Shook Overnight/Triple Royal/Pecans

When referrals from one Royal King breeder to another finally ended, we had met and dealt with at least 4 or 5 more individuals concerning their Royal King horses.

The trip ended after nine very eventful, precious days; a new trailer was acquired with us having a third interest with Vern Miles, our horseshoer; the older two-horse trailer was sold together with the horse we had brought with us in exchange for Royal Berry (compliments of the Red Swindle family where we had been invited to stay--a wonderful Christian family); we had made a number of new friends that we would continue to meet and talk with in the future; and we returned in a new gooseneck 4-horse trailer with 4 Royal King mares. We purchased a total of 5 Royal King mares, leaving one behind at Red's with the understanding we would be back to get her next year.

Spring came the following year and Ben made arrangements to purchase Triple Royal from McDougals and have him boarded with Veternarian, Dr. Gail Conway. Dr. Conway was to breed him to one of the two mares we had agreed the previous visit to purchase from Marsha Cohorn; one was by Triple, Royal Leda, and her 4-year-old was by Royale Royale. The latter was bred to Triple. Also, Ben agreed to purchase a gray, Prince of Royal mare, Match My Magic, from Dr. Conway, (later sold with her two Triple Royal fillies to Gerda Kolbe in Germany).

The next trip was just as memorable. We had met Dillon Shook and his family at an independent Baptist Church on their singing tour of churches. Ben had contacted him because of a Poco and Pine cowhorse book he hadn't received (printing had been delayed due to a flooded office area), and we were able to meet him and offer them an overnight visit at our home.

So, on the way to Texas, we paid him a very warm and friendly visit, and spent the night. Again, we stayed nine days with the Swindles, helping them to tie up their Dallas and Fort Worth newspapers and going with them to deliver them early the next morning.

When we returned home from this second visit, we had another new trailer for our horseshoer, and with us we had Triple Royal, Match My Magic, Coffee Queen and Aldridge's Princess.

The third and final year we visited our friends in Texas it was to meet with other Royal King breeders to discuss preserving the Royal King bloodlines. With assistance from some of the breeders, Ben reserved a place and scheduled a time we all could meet. The meeting took place in Stephensville, Texas on September 9, 1989, and was attended by the following:

Triple Royal/New Herdsire/Swindles/Pecans

Returning from our first Texas trip at the agriculture inspection stop on the California border, we were asked where we were coming from. The answer was Comanche. Did we have any pecans? Yes! Were they shelled or unshelled? They were unshelled. Well, too bad. If they had been shelled, you could have kept them.

2nd trip...Diane shelled a huge shopping bag of them. At the same stop, they were asked if they were shelled or unshelled. Shelled! Oh, too bad, if you'd left them unshelled, you could have kept them.

We never did get to keep any pecans after the California border. Maybe, we should have asked for a copy of their written rules.
